You have more time than you think. Research shows that our society overestimates the amount of time we actually spend working by 15-20%. That means a person claiming to be working 64 hours a week is probably only working 54. High performers are able to efficiently use the 24 hours in a day to achieve their goals.
1. Make STRATEGIC TIME
High performers recognize the importance of planning. Many people who are chronically busy wind up simply moving from task to task without picking their heads up to see the big picture. Though it may seem like unproductive time, taking a second to review projects and map out weekly to-do lists can actually increase productivity during the times when your head has to be down.
2. OUTSOURCE Tasks
Those who are chronically busy are often trying to be all things to all people and do everything themselves. No wonder there’s never enough time! High performers identify what they are good at and leverage these strengths to be more efficient in their careers. Though it may not always be possible, on the majority, high performers take on projects they are confident about and fill their skill gaps with people who have the talent to make up for their shortcomings.
3. Create JOY
Sometimes, all it takes is a moment of laughter to ease what might have been a busy, stressful day. High performers know how crucial short pockets of down time are, and they fill little breaks in their days with things they enjoy. A 10-minute walk with the dog, a quick look on espn.com or a brief comedy clip can increase the endorphin response and make you more productive in your work hours.
