Building your team takes a lot of time and effort. Before you begin, you must be able to identify what you are looking for in a team. Sometimes the perfect candidate isn’t always the perfect fit for your culture.

Here are 5 Keys to building YOUR team:

1. IN OR OUT – DECIDE BETWEEN INTERNAL & EXTERNAL
Decide whether you want to hire externally or internally based on their skills and culture fit. Key questions to ask yourself: Do we have the necessary skills in house? Will bringing someone in from outside cause a positive or negative effect?

2. FIT – BALANCE ATTRIBUTES & SKILLS
Depending on the project or task, consider the balance between skills and attributes. Key questions to ask yourself: Can we teach someone to do the required work or do we need someone who already knows how?

3. DIVERSITY – ENCOURAGE DIVERSITY ON YOUR TEAMS
Consider complementary personalities and demographics while managing goals and results. Key questions to ask yourself: Do we have a balance of backgrounds on our team? What does the team require to best do the job?

4. LEADERSHIP – IDENTIFY TALENT & GAMECHANGERS
Identify team members that are leaders and can drive the vision and goals with you. Key questions to ask yourself: Do I have enough leaders? Where can I find more leaders? Does this team require a level of influence?

5. ASSESS – REFLECT ON CURRENT ROLES
Consider the team in their roles and determine if the roles and team align. Key questions to ask yourself: Would this person do a better job in a different role? Are their strengths best exhibited in their current role?
